An allergy and ingredient scanner app the whole family can rely on.
Our lead developer was heavily involved in the design and build of ClearaScan, a live iOS ingredient checker and food and skincare label scanner. It reads the label on the product in your hand and checks it against each person's own Ingredient Guard, their personal allergen rules. Here is what went into it, and how we can build something similar for you.
It is built for allergies and intolerances, from gluten and coeliac (celiac) to dairy and lactose, nut allergies and more, across food, skincare, cosmetics and makeup, for one person or the whole family.
LIVE ON THE APP STORE Sarah Wood, our lead developer and UI/UX designer, was heavily involved in its design and build, and in taking it from a conceptual idea through to App Store approval.
What the app does
The features you asked about, all built and live in ClearaScan.
Different allergies. One family. One scan.
Each person has their own Ingredient Guard, their personal allergen rules. One photographed label is checked against every profile at once, and each person gets their own clear result, so a parent can shop for the whole family in a single scan.
Save the products that work. Check them again in a tap.
Favourite shampoo, everyday groceries, the skincare that suits them. Saved products keep their checked ingredients, so they can be re-checked against any profile without photographing the label again. The app also reminds people to re-scan when ingredients may have changed.
Because you can't always be there to check for them.
Sometimes someone else does the shopping: a grandparent, a partner, a friend. A profile can be shared with someone trusted, so they can scan products against that person's Ingredient Guard on their own phone, while only the owner can change it. More independence for them, less worry for you.
When something doesn't agree with you, keep a record.
Reactions are not always easy to understand or remember later. The reaction journal gives each profile a place to record what happened and when, keeping useful information together over time, across the whole family.
And the parts that make it trustworthy
Ingredient Guard
Each profile's own Ingredient Guard: the allergens and ingredients they need to avoid. The app checks the actual printed label, not a barcode database that can fall out of date.
Reads the real label
It reads the ingredients on the product in your hand, including labels that wrap around curved bottles, over several photos.
Travel translation
Supported foreign-language labels are translated into English and checked against the same Ingredient Guard, for shopping abroad.
Privacy first
No advertising cookies, ever. Clear data deletion and retention policies, and GDPR built in from the start.
What went into building it
A real product, not a prototype.
ClearaScan is a native iOS app with the design, the engineering and the commercial plumbing to stand on its own: a per-profile Ingredient Guard rules engine, label reading, Care Circle sharing with invites and permissions, a subscription model with a free trial and paid tiers, consent-aware analytics, and the privacy policies the App Store requires. Sarah Wood was the lead developer and UI/UX designer, and took it from a conceptual idea through to App Store submission and approval.
That is the difference between an app that demos well and one that is actually live, paid for and used.
Whether it is an allergy and ingredient checker for your own brand, or a different idea entirely, we can design and build it, and get it onto the App Store. You get the same feature thinking: profiles, trusted items, trusted-carer sharing, journals, subscriptions and privacy done properly.
